Western Sahara: Self-determination solution reaffirmed by the Security Council

Submitted on

New York (UN), April 24, 2012 (SPS) -The Security Council of the UN adopted Tuesday a resolution on Western Sahara in which it reaffirmed the solution allowing "self-determination of the Sahrawi people," while stressing the need for complete freedom of movement for MINURSO.

Unanimously adopted, the resolution 2204 (2012) points out that the Security Council "reaffirms its commitment to help both parties to the conflict to achieve a fair, lasting, and mutually acceptable solution, allowing the self-determination of the people of the Western Sahara."

In addition, the Security Council has also considered one of the recommendations of the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, noting that MINURSO (United Nations Mission for the organization of a referendum in Western Sahara) must have a free action with all stakeholders, while allowing an "unhindered movement for the implementation of its mandate."

In this regard, the UN chief had clearly stated in his report that MINURSO has difficulty to perform its missions, stating that it is able "neither to fully exercise its functions of monitoring, observation and liaison related to peacekeeping, nor contain, on its own authority, the erosion of its ability to implement its mandate."

He also noted that "the principle of neutrality of the UN is, for many years, compromised by Morocco".

Moreover, the Security Council decided to extend until April 30, 2013 the mandate of MINURSO. (SPS)
