US Department of State swipes at Morocco for human trafficking

Submitted on

Washington  (United States) June21,2012(SPS) - US Department of State severly criticized Morocco for the scale of human trafficking affecting Moroccan men, women and children, victims of forced labor and sex trafficking, not only in their country but also in Europe and the Middle East.

In a 2012 world report on Trafficking in Persons, the Department of State stressed that Morocco "is a source, destination, and transit country for men, women and children who are subjected to forced labour and sex trafficking."

"Moroccan women are forced to prostitute in the Gulf countries as well as other Middle East and European nations."

Even children are not spared as "some Moroccan girls as young as six or seven years old, from rural areas, are recruited to work as child maids in cities, and often experience conditions of forced labour, such as nonpayment of wages, threats, and physical or sexual abuse, and restrictions on movement," the report underlined.

"Moroccan men, women, and children are exploited for forced labour and sex trafficking in European and Middle Eastern countries. Moroccan women are forced into prostitution in Gulf States (including the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain), Jordan, Libya, Syria, and European countries; some of them experience restrictions on movement, threats, and emotional and physical abuse."(SPS)
