Shaheed Al Hafed (refugee camps), July 9, 2012 (SPS) - The Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General for Western Sahara, Mr. Wolfgang Weisbrod-Weber, stated that he listened to the views of the Saharawi citizens and POLISARIO leaders on the status quo and the ways to move forward a settlement to the conflict in Western Sahara.

“I have been warmly received by the Sahrawi citizens and Saharawi leadership with which I discussed the current situation and ways to move forward in resolving the conflict,” said the UN Envoy for Western Sahara, in statements after a meeting on Saturday with the President Mohamed Abdelaziz at the end of his visit to the Saharawi refugee camps.

During the meeting, the Saharawi President reaffirmed “readiness” of the Saharawi authorities to cooperate with the new special representative of UN Secretary General for Western Sahara to facilitate its mission in the region.

He in this context stressed on the need to accelerate the work of the UN Mission for the referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) to revive the UN efforts in favor of decolonization of Western Sahara, which remains blocked due to Morocco’s refusal to cooperate with Christopher Ross, the personal envoy of UN Secretary General.
