UN Fourth Committee adopts draft resolution reaffirming right of Saharawi people to self-determination

New York, Oct 16, 2012 (SPS) - The United Nations Fourth Committee on decolonization adopted Monday in New York a draft resolution supporting the right to self-determination of the Western Sahara’s people, recommending the efforts of the UN Secretary General and his personal Envoy.

 

In a draft resolution forwarding to General Assembly,  the UN Fourth Commite underlined that it has studied  in depth the question of decolonization in Western Sahara, reaffirming the rights of the people to self-determination and independence in accordance with in accordance with General Assembly resolution 1514.

 

The draft resolution recalled the Security Council resolutions on the Western Sahara question , pointing out that the UN Personal Envoy, Christopher Ross has organized several informal talks between the parties to the conflict Polisario Front and Morocco.

 

It asserted and the responsibility of the United Nations towards the people of Western Sahara.

The UN Fourth Committee’s draft resolution stated that the United Nations supports the negotiations path to achieve a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution, which will provide for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara.

 

The draft resolution requests the UN SG to submit a report to the next session of the General Assembly on the implementation of this resolution.

 

“Polisario and SADR Government on this occasion expressed thier gratitude to all countries and regional groups that have been involved throughout the session to defend the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination and independence  and have made possible the adoption of this resolution at the time the Personal Envoy of the Secretary General is preparing to make a visit to the region before submitting his report to the Security Council” said statement of Saharawi Foreign Affairs.
