EU-Morocco agriculture agreement does not include Western Sahara territories, confirms Dutch Minister

Hague, Dec 1, 2012 (SPS) - The Foreign Minister of the Netherlands Mr. Uri Rosenthal confirmed indicated that the Kingdom of Morocco “cannot rely on the references regarding agricultural products in Western Sahara, on the basis of the agricultural agreement between the European Union and Morocco.”


“The above-mentioned agricultural agreement which, to come into force at a later date, is legitimate only at the level of Moroccan territory. Morocco has no right over the products of Western Sahara, invoking to the provisions of the joint agreement, and on this basis, the Dutch Customs will follow up this matter, on behalf of the Council of Ministers and the Commission of the presidency of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and innovation,” he stated.


Responding to a question by a Dutch parliamentarian, the Minister noted that the distinctive brand set by Morocco on the agricultural products is “deceptive”.


This statement coincides with the convictions of other countries outside the European Union, such as Norway and the United States of America, on the grounds that Western Sahara is not part of Morocco. (SPS)
