Trial of Gdeim Izik prisoners is "illegal", says Spanish MEP Willy Meyer

Rabat, Feb 10, 2013 (SPS) - The Spanish MEP Willy Meyer said Friday in Rabat (Morocco) that the trial of 24 Sahrawi political prisoners called the “Gdeim Izik’s group” before the military court is "illegal" and "unfair", as it concerns activists living in Western Sahara, a territory under occupation.

“It is an illegal and unfair trial, as it concerns militants living in Western Sahara, a territory under occupation and which is an issue of decolonization, which file is between the hands of the UN,” Meyer told Sunday the press, shortly before the beginning of the second hearing of the trial of the 24 Sahrawi human right defenders.

The MEP is attending the trial as an observer.

He called, in this regard, for the release of the 24 prisoners as well as all the Sahrawi political prisoners, in addition to the decolonization of Western Sahara through the organization of a self-determination referendum. (SPS)
