Moroccan ambassador in Brussels must be prevented entry to EU Parliament (MPs)

Brussels, March 8, 2013 (SPS) - European parliamentarians asked Thursday to prevent Moroccan ambassador in Brussels from entering to the European Parliament, as a response to the expulsion on Wednesday by Moroccan authorities of delegations of EU deputies were heading to El Aaiun, capital of occupied Western Sahara.


The request was made during a press conference by the 4 European MPs who were expelled by Moroccan authorities on Wednesday as they landed in Casablanca’s airport.


The MPs are; the Slovenian Ivo Figel, from Centre-Right Bloc, Spanish Vincent Ramon Gorelizm, European Socialist Party Bloc, Swedish Isabel Leuven, Greens Party Bloc, and Willy Meyer, United Left.


In a response to a statement by Moroccan ambassador in Brussels in which he confirmed that he had sent a message to the European deputies, who were heading to El Aaiun via Casablanca, they explained that they had boarded the plane when they received the letter addressed to them by the Moroccan ambassador.


The four MPs described as “unsuitable” the letter of Moroccan diplomacy representative in Brussels, urging to prevent him from entering to European Parliament.


The group was making a visit to the MINURSO mission and contact with human rights defenders in Western Sahara, in accordance with the resolutions approved by the European Parliament on January 2013. (SPS)
