New York, April 27, 2013 (SPS) - UN Security Council’s latest resolution on Western Sahara deserves credit for having emphasized "the Council’s commitment to Saharawi people’s right to self-determination as a basis for any political solution to the conflict created by Moroccan occupation," Polisario Front’s representative to the United Nations, Boukhari Ahmed, told APS.

Saharawi official’s statement was made in response to Security Council’s adoption of a resolution on Western Sahara Thursday.

The UN body, in the resolution, reiterated its call for a "just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution providing for Western Sahara people’s self-determination," while stressing the "need for improving human rights" situation in the Saharawi territories occupied by Morocco.

Boukhari noted that human rights issue got a lion’s share of attention during the debate among the Security Council members and in the media.

The issue was at the centre of recommendations the UN chief made in his report and was highlighted by the US initiative to expand the mandate of MINURSO (UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara) to incorporate a human rights monitoring mechanism. (SPS)
