Bir Lehlou (liberated territories), July 27, 2013 (SPS) - The President of the Republic and Secretary General of the Frente Polisario Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz has congratulated the Cuban people and government on the 60th anniversary of the attack on the Moncada Barracks and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, in a letter addressed Friday to His Excellency Dr. Raúl Castro Ruz, President of the Councils of State and Council of Minister of the Republic of Cuba.

Saharawi President felicitated the Cuban president and people on the occasion of this significant event, expressing gratitude to the people and government of the Republic of Cuba for their support and solidarity with the legitimate struggle of the Saharawi people for freedom and total independence.

The Moncada Barracks was a military barracks in Santiago de Cuba, named after General Guillermón Moncada, a hero of the War of Independence.

On July 26, 1953, the barracks was the site of an armed attack by a small group of revolutionaries led by Fidel Castro. This armed attack is widely accepted as the beginning of the Cuban Revolution which eventually toppled the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista in 1959.

The date on which the attack took place, July 26, was adopted by Castro as the name for the revolutionary movement (known in Spanish Movimiento 26 Julio or M 26-7) which eventually toppled the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista in 1959. (SPS)
