EL-MAHBES (Liberated Territories), December 7, 2013 (SPS) - More than 150 women from about fifteen African and European countries organized Friday a sit-in in front of the separation wall at El-Mahbes, in the liberated territories of Western Sahara, against this 2700km-long construction, along which some 5,000,000 mines are planted.
The demonstrators for solidarity with Saharawi people, who came from Algeria, South Africa, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia, Burkina Faso, Cote-d’Ivoire, the Central African Republic and Spain, chanted slogans against segregation and colonization.
In an address, the secretary general of the General Union of Saharawi Women, Fatma Mahdi, said the event held on the sidelines of the international conference on women’s role in liberation movements, Saturday at Boujdour camp, was meant to shed light on the experiences of liberation movements in Africa for peaceful and dignified life.
The conference was an opportunity to stress the significant role of African women and civil society for freedom and independence.(SPS)
