Addis Ababa, Jan 31, 2014 (SPS) - President of the Republic and Secretary General of the Frente Polisario Mr. Mohamed Abdelaziz has declared in Addis Ababa that the African Union (AU) remains “an active partner” with the United Nations (UN) in the settlement of Western Sahara conflict.

Speaking on Thursday during the discussion of African Union Peace and Security Council’s report, the President of the Republic called upon the AU, as a partner with UN in the settlement of Western Sahara conflict, to “take responsibility and to effectively act to end an legally and morally unacceptable situation, which is an illegitimate military occupation to parts of the territory of the Saharawi Republic (SADR).”

“As the Saharawi people continue to experience violations of human rights and plundering of its natural resources, whose land being divided by a military wall, heavily contaminated with internationally banned anti-personnel mines, Africa cannot stand idly by these acts,” said President Mohamed Abdelaziz.

“The time has come to put an end to an age-long conflict, which caused and still causes a real tragedy and precludes any peace, stability and development in the region of northwest Africa,” underlined the Secretary General of the Polisario Front.

President Mohamed Abdelaziz, on other hand, reiterated the Saharawi party’s adherence to the 1991 UN/AU settlement plan, which was accepted by the two parties to the Western Sahara conflict and endorsed by the UN Security Council.

He, in this respect, renewed the Saharawi party’s “constructive cooperation” in spite of Moroccan party’s intransigence and its obstruction to the task MINURSO Mission was found for, mainly that of conducting a self-determination referendum.

Saharawi President went on saying that Morocco thwarts the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) to monitor and report about human rights in the territory of Western Sahara, which is supposed to be its natural task. (SPS)
