Spanish Supreme Court hears witnesses in Western Sahara mass graves case

Submitted on

Madrid, Feb 13, 2014 (SPS) - The Supreme Court of Spain heard yesterday, Wednesday, the testimonies of the Spanish forensic experts; Carlos Martín Beristain and Paco Etxeberria, who discovered the remains of 8 Saharawi persons found in two mass graves in the region of Mheiriz in Western Sahara last June.

The Court also heard the testimony of Selma Daf Mahmud, who survived the incident, also brother of two of the 8 persons found in these mass graves.

Two of the victims’ relatives could not attend the hearing, after Spain’s Consulate in Algeria refused to grant them the visa.

In a statement reached SPS, the Association of Families of the Saharawi Prisoners and Disappeared (AFAPREDESA) criticized the Spanish Consulate’s dealing with visa of the two Saharawi citizens, who were due to attend the hearing session.

AFAPREDESA also expressed hope that such procedure not be linked to decision by the Spanish government; especially as Spain prepares to review its law in what it describes as the “universal justice.” (SPS)
