International community urged to act for Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination

Smara (refugee camps), Feb 25, 2014 (SPS) - “International community has to take every necessary action to enable Sahrawi people to decide freely their future,” said Mr. Mhamed Khadad, member of Polisario Front’s National Secretariat and coordinator with the United Nations Mission for Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).

In a statement to APS Khadad said “it’s high time for the international community to take every necessary action to allow Sahrawi people decide freely their future.”

“The question of Western Sahara is a decolonization issue and the Sahrawi people want a just solution in accordance with the international law,” said Khadad, calling on the international community to denounce the human rights violations committed by Morocco in the occupied Sahrawi territories.

In this regard, he stressed the need to broaden the prerogatives of MINURSO to human rights monitoring.

“After all the damning reports presented by Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Robert Kennedy Foundation and also the US Department of State, there’s no reason not to extend MINURSO mandate to human rights,” he said.

“It would be scandalous that the UN continues to ignore the violations and crimes committed by Morocco against the Sahrawi people,” he said, recalling the discovery of common graves of missing Saharawis executed by the Moroccan army in 1976. (SPS)
