Geneva, March 7, 2014 (SPS) – Algeria on Friday seized the UN Human Rights Council over the Human Rights situation in the Palestinian territory and Western Sahara, overshadowed by the annual report 2013 presented in the 25th session of the Council.
The Algerian delegation expressed to United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navanethem Pillay, Algeria "regret" that the report "does not mention the situation of human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories which continue to lashing out at the international community, especially Human Rights Council."
"This also applies to the situation of human rights in Western Sahara," noted the Algerian permanent mission to the UN, taking part in this session of the Council, as a member.
The Algerian delegation has, however, expressed "appreciation" to the High Commissioner for the "comprehensive" report and has paid her "deserved tribute for her dedication to the cause of human rights around the world."
Algeria has also addressed other issues raised in the report, saying that fulfilling the economic, social and cultural rights "are closely related to the stability and social cohesion."
"Experience has shown that poverty, inequality and frustrations are a breeding ground for instability, polarization and exclusion. Appropriate development policies based on good governance in a more inclusive and balanced world, are required for lasting peace and stability," said a member of the Algerian delegation speaking on the last day of the session of the Human Rights Council.
