Pan-African Parliament marks 10 years of existence

Johannesburg, March 18, 2014 (SPS) - The Pan-African Parliament celebrates today, Tuesday, its 10 years of existence in the city of Johannesburg, South Africa.


Inaugurated on 18 March 2004, the Pan-African Parliament is the African Union’s legislative organ, to which each member state contributes five MPs.


It aims at ensuring full participation of the peoples of Africa and their grassroots organizations in governance and economic integration.


The continental assembly holds two annual plenary sessions in May and October, while its permanent committees meet in March and August of each year.


The parliament opened its fourth ordinary session last Monday in Johannesburg with 32 new members taking their oath.


As a full pledging and founding member of the African Union (AU), the Saharawi Republic (SADR) is represented in the PAP by 5 members. (SPS)
