Norwegian delegation visits occupied Western Sahara

El Aaiun (occupied territories), May 29, 2014 (SPS) - A Norwegian delegation arrived Tuesday in the occupied territories of Western Sahara to assess and report about the situation of human rights in the Territory.


The delegation composed of Ingrid Hodnebo, Government Chief Executive Officer at Norway Supreme Court, and Anne Museng Knutsen, first counselor to North Africa department.


Staying in the Territory until May 31st, the delegation will hold talks with several Saharawi associations and organizations of human rights.


When in El Aaiun, capital of Western Sahara, the delegation met Wednesday evening with members of the Saharawi Association for the Victims of Gross Human Rights Violations Committed by the Moroccan State.


Saharawi activists informed Norwegian locators about current situation of human rights in the occupied territories of Western Sahara, especially the violent intervention from the part of Moroccan security forces against peaceful demonstrations held be the Saharawis.


They also highlighted that the Moroccan state violates the fundamental rights of the Saharawi people, of which their right to demonstrate and the freedom of opinion and expression, adding that Morocco continues to systematically use torture against the Saharawis. (SPS)
