Pretoria, July 24, 2014 (SPS) - Chairperson of the international relations and cooperation committee of the South African parliament Mr. Moses Masango has stressed the need to enable the Saharawi people of their right to self-determination, in an intervention during the debate on budget vote of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, said Thursday SADR embassy in Pretoria.
Pending the referendum to take place, stated Mr. Masango, Western Sahara natural resources must be protected from Moroccan state’s looting.
He urged the UN to assume “full responsibility” to protect human rights in the occupied part of Western Sahara and to assign the UN Mission for the Referendum (MINURSO) with this mandate.
Responding to a presentation on foreign policy of South Africa, petitioners backed the position taken by their country in support of the Saharawi cause, calling on their government to mobilize all available means and make more efforts so that the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination and independence is met.
