Italian Parliament reaffirms support to Saharawi people’sright to self-determination

Rome, August 1, 2014 (SPS) - The President of the Italian Parliament, Laura Boldrini, reiterated Thursday the support to the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination and freedom, during a  reception to group of Saharawi children at the headquarters of the House of the Representatives.

 

The President of the Chamber of Deputies recalled that she knows the suffering of the Sahrawi refugees, hoping that the UN fulfills its obligations to ensure the needs of these children.

 

Ms Boldrini, a former journalist and spokesman for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, as elected MP for Sicily in the general elections in February 2013 and President of the Chamber of Deputies the following month.  

 

The reception ceremony was attended by the Polisario Front representative in Italy, Amih Omar Buzeid, the political affairs adviser to the Italian Parliament, Mr. Carlo Leone, Italian associations of solidarity with the Saharawi people, the mayors of the municipalities that host the small Sahrawi ambassadors.

 

It be should be recalled that the Italian Parliament has called on the government to recognize the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) following a major diplomatic confrontation between the supporters of the Saharawi cause and those who support the Moroccan thesis.(SPS). (SPS)
