UN urged to intervene to end Morocco's blockade on occupied Sahrawi territories

Submitted on

Birlehlou (liberated territories), August 20, 2014 (SPS) - Sahrawi President Mohamed Abdelaziz has expressed to United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon concerns over Moroccan authorities' obstinacy in denying access to international observers and the blockade imposed on the occupied Sahrawi regions.

In a letter to the UN secretary general, President Abdelaziz said that "the expulsion of international observers by the Moroccan authorities and the blockade imposed on a territory, which is under the UN responsibility, does not only represent a flagrant violation of international law but also an insult to the international community."

The Sahrawi president also expressed deepest concerns over such practices, which constitute violation of UN Security Council's resolutions on human rights protection in Western Sahara.

President Abdelaziz also denounced Morocco's intense campaign of expulsion against human rights activists, lawyers, MPs, journalists of different nationalities (Spanish, Norwegian, Portuguese, Italian, French and Canadian) since April. (SPS)
