Spanish lawyers delegation in New York to defend Saharawi people right to self-determination

Madrid, October 7, 2014 (SPS) - A delegation of representatives from various Spanish institutions and organizations will attend October 8-10, the debates of the UN Special Political and Decolonization Committee (Fourth Committee) to defend the Sahrawi issue as a matter of unfinished decolonization and that Spain remains the administrative power under international law.

 

The delegation includes Inés Miranda Navarro, the General Council of Spanish Lawyers (CGAE), Maria Dolores Travieso Darias, the Canarian Association of Lawyers for Peace and Human Rights, José Revert Calabuig, the International Association of jurists for Western Sahara (IAJUWS), Javier González Vega, the human Rights Observatory of Asturias for SO (OAPSO).

 

The objective of the participation of the Spanish delegation is to defend the right to self-determination of the Saharawi people and denounce the impasse in the question of Western Sahara because of the procrastination of Morocco, according to Sahrawi diplomatic source.

 

The delegation will condemn the brutal repression perpetrated by Morocco against the Saharawi population in Western Sahara, it illegally occupies and abuse Saharawi political prisoners and activists.

 

It will express its condemnation of the death of the Saharawi political prisoner, Hasena Elwali, on September 28, in suspicious circumstances, in a military hospital in the occupied city of Dakhla and was buried seven days after in the absence of his family.

 

The delegation will also denounce the reduction of humanitarian aid to the Sahrawi refugees, who are totally dependent on international humanitarian aid for almost 4 decades due to the illegal occupation of Western Sahara by Morocco.

 

While in New York, the delegation will meet with the diplomatic corps accredited to the United Nations, including the Spanish ambassador Fernando Arias Gonzalez. (SPS)
