Polisario Front calls on UN Security Council to clarify MINURSO mandate

Submitted on

New York (United Nations) -The Polisario Front has demanded Friday in New York from the Security Council to clarify the mission entrusted to MINURSO, claiming that the UN body silence on this issue is "synonymous with abdication of responsibility."

"You and particularly the members of the UN Security Council must clarify whether the mission assigned to the MINURSO is that of a guard of an illegal occupation," said Ahmed Boukhari, Polisario Front representative to the Special Political and Decolonization Committee.

"The people of Western Sahara, which has trusted much the UN deserves this clarification from you, seeing what MINURSO has become, silence and patience is synonymous with abdication of responsibility. They are no longer a compelling option," he said.

He added that the Security Council must assume its responsibility to stop the large scale plunder of Western Sahara's resources and the systematic abuse of human rights, which latest victim was a political prisoner Hassana ElOuali, died less than a week ago in jail in the occupied city of Dakhla.

Boukhari regretted that MINURSO responsible for a mission of peace which is the organization of a self-determination referendum is gradually transformed by Morocco into the umbrella of colonization.

"The decolonization of Western Sahara should not be confused or limited to the replacement of a European colonizer by a Afro-Arab neighboring colonizer," he emphasized.

The Polisario Front representative says being encouraged by some recent developments that could "offer a new opportunity to break the deadlock," citing the appointment of former President of Mozambique, Joaquim Chissano as African Union special envoy for Western Sahara and the announcement by the UN Secretary General in April 2014 to make a final assessment of the peace process by April 2015.
