Submitted on

New York (United Nations), October 14, 2014 (SPS) – Mr. Anthony Bosah, permanent representative of Nigeria to the United Nations affirmed Friday at the debate before the UN Decolonization Committee that the referendum on self-determination for the Sahrawi people is one of the most pressing issues on the agenda of the United Nations.

“Nigeria views the quest of free and impartial referendum on self-determination for the Sahrawi people as one of the most pressing tasks on the agenda of the United Nations,” he said.

He reiterated the conviction of Nigeria that any other form of colonialism should not replace the end of Spanish colonization of Western Sahara.

Nigeria urged more efforts in seeking a settlement of the question of Western Sahara through self-determination of the Sahrawi people in conformity with the United Nations relevant resolutions.

The permanent representative of Nigeria underlined that issues of human rights and exploitation of natural resources in Western Sahara aggravated the tensions in the region, calling for urgent measures to set the negotiation for settlement afoot. (SPS)
