New York, October 14, 2014 (SPS) - The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Cuba to the United Nations, Oscar Leon Gonzales, reiterated his country's support for the legitimate right of the Saharawi people to self-determination, in his speech Friday before the UN Decolonization Committee.

"Cuba defends the right of the people of Western Sahara to self-determination on the basis of respect for the principles and purposes of the UN Charter, international law and relevant UN resolutions," he said.

In this context, he stressed that Cuba supports the efforts of the Secretary-General and his Personal Envoy "to find a mutually acceptable peaceful solution between the parties, that provides for self-determination of the people of Western Sahara in the context of resolution 1514 of the General Assembly ".

"A peaceful solution by negotiated means of this long-standing issue contributes to promoting peace and regional and international security," he added.

Finally, Oscar Leon Gonzales recalled that the Schools and Universities of Cuba, despite the embargo imposed by the United States, have taught hundreds of young Sahrawis. (SPS)
