Submitted on

Wisconsin (USA), Oct 15, 2014 (SPS) - The U.S. non-governmental organization “Not Forgotten International (NFI) on Tuesday called on the UN to incorporate a human rights mandate in the mission of MINURSO, adding that the recent death of the Saharawi political prisoner, Hasana El-Ouali, is another proof that this organ must have such a task.

In a statement issued Tuesday, Not Forgotten International “strongly” objected the dire human rights abuses carried out against the Saharawi people by Moroccan government, including of which wrongful imprisonment, mistreatment and torture of prisoners.

It also appealed to the UN to fulfill its duty in upholding human rights standards in all its operations in Western Sahara, as recognized in the report of the UN Secretary-General on the situation concerning Western Sahara, published on April 14, 2008.

“The recent death of Hasena Elwali Aleya, a Saharawi imprisoned by Morocco because of his political views in support of his people, is another proof that the UN should be compelled to include a human rights mandate in its MINURSO commitment and responsibilities to organize a referendum concerning Western Sahara,” stated the ONG.

The statement went on saying that Hasana El-Ouali’s imprisonment, death and burial would not have happened under the legal actions of a legitimate civilized government.

As a non-profit organization, Not Forgotten International is a humanitarian aid organization that exists to serve refugees and other oppressed or suffering people around the world. (SPS)
