Stockholm, Nov 5, 2014 (SPS) - Swedish MP Johan Büser said that it is high time for his country (Sweden) to recognize the Saharawi state, after it officially recognized the State of Palestine last week, reported the Algerian Press Service (APS).

In a contribution on Tuesday published in the Swedish newspaper “Aftonbladet”, Mr. Büser indicated that the Swedish government has last week taken a “historic decision” to recognize the state of Palestine, to become the first country among the 15 Member States of the European Union to do so.

“The time is now ripe to take the next step and recognize the state of Western Sahara, which is considered the last colony in Africa living under Moroccan occupation since decades,” he stated.

The Swedish MP, who visited the Saharawi refugee camps, lamented the “difficult conditions” experienced by the Saharawis on daily basis, adding that he has taken part in several conferences at home aiming to educate the Swedish public opinion about the Western Sahara issue.

For Büser, the recognition by Swedish government of Western Sahara as a free and independent state “will be a very strong signal to the international community and a message of support to the struggle of the Saharawi people for freedom and independence.”

“Sweden has a responsibility and must show its opposition to the occupation of Western Sahara. We should not turn a blind eye to the current situation in violation international law,” he underlined.

He went on saying that the recognition by Sweden of the Saharawi Republic (SADR) will also be “a clear message to other EU countries to follow suit.” (SPS)
