Madrid, November 15, 2014 (SPS) - The work of the 39th European Conference of Solidarity with the Saharawi People (EUCOCO) began Friday in Madrid with the participation of some 300 supporters of the independence of Western Sahara from five continents.
The opening ceremony was attended, notably, by President of the Republic, Secretary General of the Polsario Front, Mohamed Abdelaziz, Saharawi activist Aminatou Haider, President of the EUCOCO, Pierre Galand, President of the Algerian National Committee of Solidarity with the Saharawi People (CNASPS) Said Layachi, parliamentarians and representatives of associations.
In his opening address, the President of the Republic reaffirmed the determination of the Saharawi people in their struggle for independence, emphasizing that the resistance of the Saharawi people "puts today Morocco under tremendous pressure."
He also put the emphasis on "excesses and violations of human rights committed by the Moroccan authorities in the occupied territories of Western Sahara."
The President of the Republic considered, atthe same time, the last speech of the Moroccan king Mohamed VI "encouragement of hostilities" and the consequences that may arise "are numerous and dangerous."
Moreover, President Abdelaziz praised countries that support worthy causes in the world, in particular Algeria "for its position in favor of the implementation of the UN resolutions," he added.
This eventis intended as a "mandatory solidarity appointment" with the people of Western Sahara, said the organizers.
Thus, in addition to representatives of governments recognizing the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), deputies and national and international elected members, political and trade union organizations, friendship associations with the Saharawi people, NGOs and lawyers are participating in this Conference.
