Lanzarote (Canary Islands, Spain), Nov 19, 2014 (SPS) - Saharawi Activist and President of the Collective of Saharawi Human Rights Defenders (CODESA), Aminatou Haidar, on Tuesday told reporters that by assuming a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council, Spain “could help a lot in the search for a peaceful solution to the conflict of Western Sahara.”
The activist indicated that the situation of human rights in the occupied territories of Western Sahara “is increasingly deteriorating.”
“Regrettably, after five years, the situation of human rights remains unchanged,” she declared upon her arrival in Lanzorote Airport in the Canary Islands, where she made a 32-day hunger strike five years ago.
Ms. Haidar asked the international community to take “definitive decision” in order to put an end to this problem.
Concerning the oil exploration being carried out by Morocco offshore Western Sahara, the Activist strongly criticized Morocco’s plunder of Saharawi natural resources, citing that these natural resources must be under the sovereignty of the people.
Aminatou Haidar, who was invited to the 39th European Conference for Support and Solidarity with the Saharawi People (EUCOCO), condemned the “excessive use of force” by Moroccan State against the Saharawi peaceful demonstrators calling for their legitimate rights.
Spending 4 days in the Canary Islands, she held several meetings with officials in the region.
Haidar took this opportunity to express gratitude for the people and mass-media of Lanzarote for their constant support. (SPS)
