Morocco challenged by European Parliament on human rights abuse in Western Sahara

Submitted on

Brussels, December 6, 2014 (SPS) - Morocco was challenged once again, by the European Parliament on human rights abuse in the occupied Saharawi territories.

In a statement received by APS Friday, the European Parliament noted that several non-governmental organizations (NGOs), as Human Rights Watch (HRW), "reported several testimonies on abuses and torture as the case of Mohammed Dihani."

The EP reminded, in this regard, that "the provisions of the five year action plan in the European Union and Morocco, as part of European policy of Neighbourhood, include respect of human rights as a necessary condition for the holding of an ongoing dialogue and a gradual rapprochement of the Moroccan economy, part of the EU single market. "

The European Parliament notes that these violations perpetrated by the Moroccan authorities against Sahrawi human rights defenders who are still imprisoned, "are incompatible with this rapprochement between the Kingdom of Morocco and the European Economic Area." (SPS)
