UN aware of need to reach solution to Western Sahara question

Submitted on

Smara (Refugee Camps) – UN Secretary General’s Special Representative for Western Sahara Kim Bolduc said Saturday in the Saharawi refugee camps that the UN is acutely aware of the need to reach a solution to Western Sahara issue.

In a statement to the press after a meeting with Sahrawi Prime Minister Abdelkader Taleb Amar, the UN official said that he was closely monitoring the situation since his appointment in May 2014, through the teams activating in Western Sahara and in the Sahrawi refugee camps.

"We believe in the need to achieve a just and lasting solution to the restoration of security in the region," said Kim Bolduc.

Sahrawi Prime Minister highlighted, as for him, the cooperation of the Polisario Front with Kim Bolduc to facilitate his mission in the organization of a referendum for self-determination of the Saharawi people.

He further informed the UN official, on behalf of the Saharawi President, Mohamed Abdelaziz, of the rejection by the Sahrawi party of the policy of delay adopted by the Moroccan occupation forces, saying it was time for UN to make pressure on Morocco.

Sahrawi Prime Minister wished that the UN will take concrete steps to protect the human rights in the occupied Saharawi territories and put an end to the plundering of Western Sahara wealth by Morocco, a practice contrary to international law.

The visit of the UN official is part of a regional tour that he started Friday from Morocco and occupied Al-Ayun. (SPS)
