Submitted on

New York, March 18, 2015 (SPS) - Human Rights Watch (HRW) has asked Moroccan authorities to release the Saharawi political prisoner and activist, Mbrake Daoudi, now serving a sentence of three-month jail term in the Moroccan prison of Eit Melloul, Morocco.

In a letter addressed to the so-called Moroccan Justice and Liberties Minister on Wednesday, the ONG requested clarification of the judicial status of the Saharawi political prisoner Mbrake Daoudi, held for unreasonably long periods awaiting military court trials.

It, therefore, urged Moroccan authorities to clarify what outstanding charges, if any, Mbarek Daoudi face, and ensure that if he is to be prosecuted, his case is transferred to civilian tribunals and resolved without further delay.

The letter underlined that Moroccan military court opened the trial of the Saharawi political prisoner only to postpone it immediately and indefinitely, without providing a reason.

It is to be recalled that Mbarek Daudi was arrested on 29 September 2013 in Guleimim, southern Morocco, as part of a campaign of arrests against Saharawi citizens, especially human rights defenders.

He went on several hunger strike inside prison.

On March 9th this year, Moroccan occupation’s court sentenced to three months of imprisonment with a fine the Saharawi political prisoner, Mbarek Daoudi. (SPS)
