Algiers, May 28, 2015 (SPS) - Algeria and Lesotho reaffirmed Thursday their support for the UN in its efforts to find a solution to the conflict of Western Sahara based on the exercise by the Saharawi people of their “inalienable” right to self-determination, according to a joint statement released Thursday after the state visit paid by King of Lesotho Lestie III, at the invitation of President of the Algerian Republic Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika and King of Lesotho Lestie III “reaffirmed their support for the efforts of the United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki- moon, and his special Envoy, Christopher Ross, aiming at finding a just and lasting settlement to this conflict based on the exercise by the People of Western Sahara of their inalienable right to self-determination through the holding of a free, fair and impartial referendum.”
They also reaffirmed their “support to the fulfillment of the national aspirations of the people of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic.”
The two leaders expressed “satisfaction at the involvement of the African Union on this issue in particular, through the appointment of a Special Envoy in the person of Mr. Joaquim Chissano, and the adoption of a Communiqué on Western Sahara by the Peace and Security Council on March 27th, 2015,” the source added.
They urged the United Nations Security Council to take all necessary decisions to ensure progress in the search for a solution to the conflict in Western Sahara acknowledging its critical role and primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security. (SPS)
