Polisario Front reiterates call for extension of MINURSO mandate to control of human rights

Dakhla (Refugee Camps), December 24, 2015 (SPS) - The Polisario Front reiterated, Wednesday, its call for the extension of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) mandate to include the control and protection of human rights in the face of serious violations perpetrated by the Moroccan occupier.

At the end of the 14th congress, which took place in the Sahrawi Refugee camps in Dakhla, the Polisario Front insisted on the need to extend the MINURSO mandate to include the control and the protection of human rights, underlining the importance to open Sahrawi territories to observers and the international press to allow them inquire about the violations perpetrated by the Moroccan occupier.

The Polisario Front, which called on the international community to exert pressure on Morocco for the release of all Sahrawi political prisoners, condemned “the arbitrary sentences” pronounced by military courts against the prisoners of Gdeim Izik.

The congress, which took place from 16 to 23 December underlined that “Morocco represents a real threat to peace and stability in the region and in the world, with its expansionary policy against the Sahrawi people and the neighboring countries and the flooding of the region with large quantities of drugs that directly or indirectly supply criminal networks and terrorist groups.”

Furthermore, it warned the international community against the flagrant violations of human rights perpetrated by the Moroccan occupier against Sahrawis as well as the practices of torture and repression.

The Polisario front hoped that the upcoming visit of the United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon and the intention expressed by his personnel representative, Christopher Ross, constitute a “new opportunity” to be grasped by the United Nations, particularly the members of the Security Council.
