Submitted on
Geneva (Switzerland), January 07, 2015 (SPS) – the Sahrawi Coordinator with MINURSO, Mr. M'hamed Khadad was received at Wilson Palace in Geneva by Mr. Zeid Ra'ad Al-Hussein,the High Commissioner for Human Rights of the United Nations. The talks discussed the situation of human rights in the occupied territories, and the work of the High Commissioner in this regard in accordance with the regulations of the UN Security Council, on the basis of the status of Western Sahara as a territory registered under decolonization. the Sahrawi diplomat emphasized that the visits of the technical missions of the High Commission to the territory, even important, cannot constitute a permanent and credible monitoring of the situation of human rights that only MINURSO, present on the ground, can assume. Finally, Khadad appealed the High Commissioner for Human Rights to intervene to ensure the opening of the territory to foreign observers and especially, as has just recommended the European Parliament in its resolution of December 2015, the immediate release of Saharawi political prisoners in Moroccan jails including those sentenced after the uprising Gdeim Izik. It should be recalled that the meeting was attended by the representative of the Polisario Front in Switzerland Ms. Omaima AbdSalam.(SPS) 125/090/TRA
