Department of State rejects decision of Congress concerning use in Western Sahara of aid for Morocco

Washington, January 11, 2016 (SPS) - The Department of State has rejected a provision of the Congress on the use in Western Sahara of a controversial financial aid, destined for Morocco, members of American Parliament told APS on Sunday.

The financial aid in question is an aid granted to Morocco under the 2016 US federal budget and whose funds can be used in Western Sahara.

The provision was adopted thanks to the support of the Moroccan lobby in the Congress, consisting mainly of congressmen from Florida, and its implementation is however subject to the assessment of the Department of State which considers that it goes against the American position towards the issue of Western Sahara.

In this regard, the Sahrawi caucus said that this rejection comes following a correspondence that it has recently sent to the Department of State to challenge this provision of the American federal budget because its implementation marks the indirect recognition of the fallacious claims of the Sahrawi territories by Morocco.

Such a provision “will implicitly confirm Moroccan’s sovereignty over the Sahrawi territories which goes against the American government’s position on this issue,” said congressmen friends of Western Sahara. (SPS)
