Algiers, 7 March 2016 (SPS) - Algeria underlined the "need" to complete the Western Sahara decolonization process, through the organization of self-determination referendum for the Sahrawi people, said Sunday in Algiers Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ramtane Lamamra.

"We discussed Western Sahara (cause) and assured to the UN chief the imperative of completing the Western Sahara decolonization process through the United Nations Mission for the organization of a self-determination referendum for Western Sahara people," said Lamamra during a joint press briefing with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

The referendum should be "regular", "transparent" and take place under "favourable conditions" for the Saharawi people and the international community, the Algerian minister insisted.

The UN Secretary General arrived Saturday in Algiers for a visit to Algeria, part of his tour of the region in order to relaunch negotiations to settle the conflict in Western Sahara between Morocco and the Polisario Front. (SPS)
