Morocco, France turn back colonial clock

Submitted on

Algiers, 5 November 2024 (SPS) - According to a front-page article in Tuesday's "Le Soir d'Algérie," Morocco and France are disregarding all UN decolonization resolutions for Western Sahara and bringing back the colonial system of the 19th century, complete with its atrocities and injustices.

In a commentary headlined “France haunted by its colonial past,” the article's author highlighted how the Elysée “flouted international law by giving away what is not theirs to those without merit, driven by pure colonialism, while ignoring UN resolutions and undermining both the Security Council — where France holds a permanent seat — and European judicial authority.”

“The two colonizers — master and pupil — are bringing back 19th century colonial rule, complete with its atrocities and injustices, by unethically claiming ownership of another people's territory. Yet it was no secret that France has consistently backed Morocco's colonization of Western Sahara since 1975,” Le Soir d'Algérie noted.

The article added: Western Sahara's people “will keep on confronting those seeking to rob them of their homeland for profit and illusory reasons,” particularly given that international law and legitimacy support the Sahrawis, who remain more resolute than ever in thwarting all schemes and strategies of the Makhzen's colonial regime and its supporters.

It is worthy to note that October saw legal victories for the legitimate rights and just cause of the Sahrawi people, as the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) ruled the trade agreements between Morocco and the EU, encompassing the occupied Sahrawi territories, to be illegal.
