Algiers, 27 February 2024 (SPS) -The embassy of Brazil to Algeria organized a ceremony to announce the Brazilian humanitarian initiative to assist Sahrawi refugees within the framework of the Sahrawi Refugee Response Plan (SRRP) for the period 2024-2025, recently launched by the United Nations (UN) for the benefit of the Sahrawi people.

In a speech delivered on the occasion, the Chargé d'Affaires at the Embassy of Brazil, Mauricio Alves Da Costa, said that this initiative aimed to "meet the needs of Sahrawi refugees settled in the camps for the year 2023, following the Brazilian Government's decision to offer them aid, by associating Brazilian civil society and companies from the private sector.”

The Brazilian diplomat indicated that his country decided to donate 65 water purifiers to ensure access to drinking water for the refugee camps, particularly at schools, and also intended to donate 65 solar panels and 65 stationary batteries for greater efficiency in equipment powered by renewable energy.

As for food, Da Costa emphasized that "Brazil has increased its contribution to the World Food Program (WFP) by 20% in 2023, given the need to improve the food situation of all Sahrawi refugees and reduce the rates of illness and death due to malnutrition.”
