President of Republic to Sputnik: Referendum is compromise solution for Western Sahara question

Addis Ababa (African Union), February 23, 2024 (SPS) - The President of the Republic , Secretary General of the Polisario Front, Mr. Brahim Ghali, stressed in an interview with the Russian news agency Sputnik, published Tuesday, that the referendum of the Sahrawi people to self-determination is the compromise solution for decolonizing Western Sahara.

In his statement to the Russian agency, the Sahrawi president said, "The referendum itself is a compromise solution because we are for our unconditional independence, while the Kingdom of Morocco demands annexation."

President Brahim Ghali added, "Therefore, for the compromise solution, we cannot accept anything other than a free, fair and transparent referendum that allows Sahrawi men and women to freely choose their future, and to respect the results of this referendum."

Regarding his assessment of the UN role in resolving the conflict between the Sahrawi Republic and the Kingdom of Morocco, both member countries of the African Union, the Sahrawi president stressed that "the United Nations is called upon to implement its mandate in the territory, by organizing the referendum".

On the other hand, the President of the Sahrawi Republic expressed his hope to visit Moscow, noting his hope that there will be an exchange of visits between the two sides, so that "the relationship develops," considering that the exchange of visits at various levels contributes to this.

It is worth noting that the principled and firm Russian position on the conflict in Western Sahara is committed to achieving a just and lasting peace in the Western Sahara issue through political means based on respect for international law, including respect for and implementation of the resolutions of the Security Council and the United Nations General Assembly, within the framework of international legitimacy, says Sputnik.
