37th Summit of African Union kicks off in Addis Ababa in presence of President of Republic

Addis Ababa, 17 February 2024 (SPS) - The 37th Summit of the African Union kicked off on Saturday, in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, in presence of the President of the Republic and Secretary-General of the Polisario Front, Mr. Brahim Ghali.

The opening session witnessed speeches by Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Abiy Ahmed, Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Mohammad Shtayyeh, Prime Minister of Palestine, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, President of Brazil, Azali Assoumani, former President of the African Union and President of the Comoros, Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, the new President of the African Union and President of Mauritania.

The opening session also saw the appointment of the new Bureau of the African Union, which includes, Mohamed Ould Ghazouani (Mauritania) as President, Angola as First Vice-President, Congo as Second Vice-President, Ghana as Third Vice-President, Comoros as Rapporteur.

During the summit, which lasts for two days, the heads of member states discuss various international and regional issues, in addition to the central theme of the session, which focuses on the challenges of education in Africa. They also address institutional reforms of the African Union and the implementation of its 2063 development agenda, as well as the activation of the African Continent's standby military force.
