Algiers, March 23, 2021 (SPS) - The African Union (AU) is called upon to take coercive measures against any member who does not respect its decisions in order to preserve its credibility, the ambassador of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic said on Monday in Algiers, Abdelkader Taleb Omar.
In a statement to APS, in reaction to the rejection by the Kingdom of Morocco of the latest decision of the AU Peace and Security Council (CPS) on the issue of Western Sahara, Taleb Omar stated that this decision "comes at the moment timely ", especially after the blocking of the UN plan to resolve the conflict, stating that" the African Union and all its organs must enforce their decisions with concrete measures. "
"After 30 years of postponement and delay by Morocco, the AU and its Council have the right to address the issue of the Western Sahara conflict," said the Saharawi ambassador, reiterating his call for the reactivation of the role of the continental organization in this sense and the application of the pertinent resolutions of the UN.
The decision of the PSC sends a strong message to the Moroccan regime, on the one hand, to stop its maneuvers, and to the UN, on the other, to speed up the settlement process by appointing a personal envoy of his SG for Western Sahara and address the issue of opening illegal consulates in the occupied parts of Western Sahara, said Taleb Omar.
For the Saharawi diplomat, the CPS decision "inflicts a slap in the face on the Moroccan regime that had tried to secure the support of some states by spending large sums of money for the purchase of consciences," he said.
The AU is now called upon to take coercive measures against any member that does not respect its decisions so that Morocco does not flout its resolutions, and this to preserve the effectiveness of its laws and guarantee its credibility.
Taleb Omar hopes that the positive and strong role of the AU will be maintained in order to make relevant decisions about many conflicts in the region, to help establish peace and stability and to end expansion, tyranny and contempt of laws. SPS
