Brussels, March 22, 2016 (SPS) - members of European Parliament sent a letter to the United Nation Secretary General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon in which they have commended his recent visit to Saharawi refugee camps and the reaffirmation of your commitment to the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara, and your promise to spare no effort to help make progress in this regard.
Bellow the full text of the letter:
We, members of European Parliament, write to commend you on your recent visit to the Saharwi refugee camps and liberated territories, the reaffirmation of your commitment to the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara, and your promise to spare no effort to help make progress in this regard.
For forty years the Sahrawis have remained in limbo, overlooked by the international community and notably by the European Union.
For twenty five years, the UN’s efforts to resolve the question of Western Sahara have stalled, largely due to Morrocco’s obstruction and to the behavior of some countries who blatantly disregard international law and human rights. As you have clearly highlighted, this situation is unacceptable.
Your visit and clear statement of commitment give hope of a long resolution to this conflict and for justice fir the people of Western Sahara. We urge you to ensure all efforts are now applied, in particular in the run up to renewal of MINURSO’s mandate.
Calls are growing to set a date for the referendum; please do all you can to expedite this process.
Once again, thank you for your efforts and commitment to justice for the people of Western Sahara. We look forward to your efforts to break the stalemate and provide for a referendum for the right of self-determination for the people of Western Sahara.SPS
