Birlahlou (Liberated Territories), 19 September 2022 (SPS) - The Sahrawi government welcomed Monday Kenya's "historic" and "principled" position in favor of the Sahrawi Republic's (SADR) right to sovereignty and its people's right to freedom and independence, which Nairobi defends in all regional and international events.
In a statement by the Sahrawi Ministry of Foreign Affairs, following the renewal of Kenya's position on the Sahrawi issue and the affirmation of its maintenance of distinguished diplomatic relations with the SADR, "the Sahrawi government seizes, on behalf of the Sahrawi people, this opportunity to congratulate the Republic of Kenya for its historic and principled position in support of the Sahrawi state's right to sovereignty and the right of its people to freedom and independence, defended by Kenya in all regional and international events.
The Kenyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs has just affirmed in a statement that "Kenya's position on the SADR is fully aligned with the decision of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) to admit the SADR to membership on August 22, 1982, and the AU (African Union) Charter which calls for the people's indisputable and inalienable right to self-determination.
"In addition, the country aligns itself with the decisions of subsequent assemblies of heads of state and government at the AU on SADR," the ministry added.
Therefore, the statement continued, "Kenya aligns itself with UN Security Council Resolution 690 (1991) which calls for the self-determination of Western Sahara through a free and fair referendum led by the UN and the AU. Kenya supports the full implementation of this UN Security Council resolution.
Highlighting Kenya's excellent relationship with all AU and UN members, the ministry affirmed that it will always continue to strengthen these relations for mutual benefit.
