Berlin, 4 December 2022 (SPS) - The President of the European Coordination for Support and Solidarity with the Saharawi People (EUCOCO), Pierre Galand, called from Berlin for respect for international law and court decisions issued by African and European courts regarding Western Sahara.
Speaking on the sidelines of the 46th conference of the EUCOCO which concluded Saturday in the German capital, Berlin, Mr. Galand stressed that the common ambition of the solidarity movement with the Sahrawi people he leads was to "live together in security and cooperation.
To do this, he said, "let's respect international law, let's respect the rulings of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), which ruled that Western Sahara is a separate and distinct territory from Morocco, and which stated clearly that Western Sahara has a people, has a representative, the Polisario Front in this case, and that the Sahrawis must have their land and their resources. And let us also respect the latest ruling of the African Court of Human and Peoples' Rights, on the need to find a permanent solution to the Moroccan occupation of Western Sahara.
The President of EUCOCO praised "the spirit of solidarity of Algerians known throughout history and which has focused today around the Sahrawi people and their fundamental rights".
The Belgian activist also recalls that "the international community recognizes all the rights essential to the independence of the Sahrawi people and their right to live freely in their nation which is Western Sahara. I think that all of us, as an (international) solidarity movement, are capable of making the Moroccans understand that they are on the wrong path".
"We are able to explain to them that today, their state is in full illegality with regard to the international community and that the plan proposed by Morocco is nothing other than a plan of annexation," concluded Pierre Galand.
