New York (United Nations) 14 October 2022 (SPS) - The European Union reaffirmed the support of the union for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara after the approval by the Special Political and Decolonization Committee (Fourth Committee) of the 77th sessions of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) of a new resolution on Western Sahara.
Czechia, on behalf of the European Union, the candidate countries North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania and the Republic of Moldova, countries of the Stabilization and Association Process and potential candidate Bosnia and Herzegovina, stated that the EU looks forward to the consensual adoption of the resolution on the situation concerning Western Sahara.
They welcomed “the commitment of the UN Secretary General to relaunch the negotiation process with a new dynamic and a new spirit leading to the resumption of a political process with the aim to achieve a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution that will provide for the self-determination of the people of Western Sahara in the context of arrangement consistent with the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations.”
They also affirmed that they “continue to encourage the parties to work towards such a solution, within the framework of the United Nations."
The EU is further deeply concerned about “the lack of funding and urged the international community to provide new and additional financial contributions for the Sahrawi refugees.” (SPS)
