New York (United Nations) 15 October 2022 (SPS)- Minister Coubnsellor at the Permanent Mission of Mozambique to the UN, Mr. Antonio Bambissa, affirmed that the right to self-determination is inalienable to all peoples, stressing the need to implement UN and AU resolution to decolonize Western Sahara.
In his country’s statement last Thursday before the UN General Assembly’s 4th Committee, the Mozambican diplomat affirmed that “Mozambique’s position on this matter is very clear. We continue to defend the unconditional implementation of all United Nations relevant resolutions and all African Union decisions on Western Sahara, aimed at bringing a positive, peaceful and durable solution that can meet the aspirations and the will of the people of Western Sahara.”
The Republic of Mozambique, he added, “strongly believes that the right to self-determination is an inalienable right to all peoples, as clearly enshrined in our Constitution, in the UN Charter and other relevant documents of our organization.”
It is against this background that the Republic of Mozambique “continues its longstanding support aimed at finding the acceptable solution to allow the people of Western Sahara to exercise their inalienable right to self -determination, in accordance with the General Assembly resolution 1514,” he said.
While recognizing the importance of the appointment of the Special Envoy of United Nations Secretary General for Western Sahara during the 76th Session, Mozambique considers that “the delay on the implementation of legal instruments approved, with a view to granting self-determination for the people of Western Sahara is a matter of serious concern”, as it is impacting negatively on the lives of the Saharawis, he concluded.
