Spain should repair its mistake by publicly reversing its position in support of Moroccan occupation contrary to international law

Brussels (Belgium), 9 October 2022 (SPS) - Member of the National Secretariat of the Polisario Front in charge of Europe and the European Union, Mr. Abbi Bushraya Bashir, commenting on the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs' abandonment of a map that annexed Western Sahara to Morocco, has affirmed that the Polisario Front took note of this change with regard to the issue of borders on the Foreign Ministry's website as well as Sanchez's address to the General Assembly, which remained a small and symbolic step but was in the right direction.
In an interview on Algiers International Channel, the Maghreb Scene program, the Sahrawi official stressed, "the Spanish Government has caused considerable harm through its position expressed in the Prime Minister's letter to the Moroccan King, underlining that its repair should be in proportion to the damage, i.e. by publicly reversing the change in a position that constituted a blatant interference in the path led by the United Nations between the two parties to the conflict, the Polisario Front and the Kingdom of Morocco.”
“Spain, as the former colonial and administering Power in Western Sahara, according to international law, has direct historical, legal and moral responsibilities to the Sahrawi people and their right to self-determination, as well as to the settlement of the conflict that poisoned the region's relations as a whole because of Madrid's abandonment of those obligations, which are not subject to statute of limitations,” he said.
“Spain’s assumption of these responsibilities should be the only background that guides Spain’s position towards the conflict, noting that Pedro Sanchez’s decision was rejected by various forces including those had never counted on supporters of the Sahrawi people and the Polisario Front,” Mr. Abbi Bushraya Bashir added.
