New York October 4, 2022 (SPS) - The Permanent Representative of the Republic of Nicaragua to the United Nations, Mr. Jaime Hermida Castillo, stressed in his country's intervention before the Fourth United Nations Committee yesterday, that Nicaragua supports the right of the Sahrawi people "to freedom, self-determination and national sovereignty".
Mr. Jaime Hermida Castillo, stated that his country, which had fought for liberation, "highly affirms that the people and government of reconciliation and national unity in the Republic of Nicaragua will always remain firm and determined to defend the fundamental principles of international law that recognize the noble right of the people of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic to freedom, self-determination and national sovereignty."
On the other hand, the Permanent Representative of Nicaragua considered that "the holding of a referendum, supervised by the United Nations, to determine the fate of the Sahrawi people is crucial in resolving this colonial situation."
Jaime Hermida Castillo considered that Nicaragua is committed to firm solidarity with the peoples of the Non-Self-Governing Territories, and hopes that the Fourth Committee will succeed in achieving collective action in order to defend the right of these peoples "to self-determination and independence until the final eradication of colonialism in all its forms".
