Western Sahara Campaign considers Spain's position on Western Sahara a violation of Security Council Resolution 690

London (UK), 29, March 2022 (SPS) - The British NGO Western Sahara Campaign expressed its resentment at the decision of the Spanish government to abandon its commitment to the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination, as established by resolutions 658 and 690 of the Security Council.
In a statement made public yesterday, the British NGO said that "with its support for the Moroccan proposal, the Spanish government turns its back on the Saharawi people's right to self-determination."
"Spain decided this change of position without consulting or agreeing with the Saharawis, a fact that demonstrates Madrid's shameful abdication of its responsibilities", highlights the statement, adding that "the fictitious Moroccan proposal for autonomy is nothing more than a tool to support its military occupation of a large part of Western Sahara, continuing its campaign to eliminate the national and cultural identity of the Saharawi people”.
On the other hand, the statement from the British NGO states that "all governments have the responsibility to defend the rights stipulated in the Charter of the United Nations and Spain also has an additional moral responsibility towards the Saharawi, being the former colonial power that handed over Western Sahara to Morocco in 1976, breaching its promise of self-determination”.
