Human and peoples' rights activist Mahrez Lamari calls on Madrid to reconsider its new position on Western Sahara

Algiers, 21 March 2022 (SPS) - Human and peoples' rights activist, Mahrez Lamari, has expressed his "indignation" and "astonishment" at the latest statements of the high authorities of Spain over Western Sahara issue, calling them to reconsider their new position, aligned with Morocco's colonial expansionist policy in a flagrant violation of the international law.
In an open letter, the former chairman of the Algerian National Committee on Solidarity with the Sahrawi People expressed his "indignation, anger and astonishment at the latest statements of the top authorities of Spain over Western Sahara, included in 1963 in the UN list of non-autonomous Territories."
The human rights activist added that the UN General Assembly had adopted its first resolutions on the matter since 1965, calling for the decolonization of those territories by referendum.
Lamari stressed the political, legal and ethical responsibility of Spain in the tragedy of Western Sahara people.
He denounced Spain's "new treason," describing it as "stabbing Western Sahara people in the back" and a "flagrant violation of international law."
