Washington (United States), 20 December 2021 (SPS) - UN Secretary General's special envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, is hard at work to find a political solution to the conflict in the last colony in Africa, the White House said, citing a top US official.
"We now have a UN Envoy (for Western Sahara), Staffan de Mistura, one of the world’s most experienced diplomats. We worked closely with the parties (to the conflict) to ensure Staffan was appointed to that post," the US official said in a year-end briefing on the situation in the Middle East and North Africa.
The new envoy for Western Sahara "is now hard at work, which we think is quite important for keeping that conflict in check and trying to find a political resolution."
